We all know about the 7 deadly sins of human behaviour, but here I show you how they can be translated into 7 Online Business Mistakes.
A bit of history surrounding the origin of the 7 deadly sins
The seven deadly sins originated in the 6th century when Greek monastic theologian Evagrius of Pontus drew up a list of the eight offenses and wicked human passions
gluttony, lust, avarice, sadness, anger, acedia, vainglory, and pride
In the late 6th century, Pope Gregory the Great decided the list should be reduced to 7 incorporating vainglory into pride and acedia into sadness, he also added envy.
He based his ranking of the Sins’ seriousness on how they offended against love, from most serious to least serious: pride, envy, anger, sadness, avarice, gluttony, and lust.
In the seventeenth century, the Church, not happy with the vagueness of the sin of “sadness” decided to replace it with sloth.
So we end up with the 7 deadly sins.
Pride is an excessive belief in one’s own abilities,
Envy is the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is a desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Lust is a craving for the pleasures of the body.
Wrath is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain,
Sloth is a failure to do things that one should do
So how can we translate these 7 deadly sins into the world of online marketing?
Pride …. an excessive belief in one’s own abilities,
Article spinning and curation.
Believing that really all you need to do is produce one original article and the spin or curate the most part of your website.
Spinning Articles is taking someone else’s work putting into some article spinning software and churning out the same article only substituting some words for others, thus making a trumped up version that probably doesn’t make grammatical sense and only makes for a bad User Experience.
Curation is the method of taking articles from other websites, copying and pasting onto your site and saying something like Tom Dick or Harry from XYZ company.com explains it this way. Ok so you are providing links maybe to the other person’s article, but your SEO standing is going to be diluted from duplicate content.
In both these cases, you shouldn’t be too proud to think that your time is more valuable in some other way than to write original content in your own words.
Envy… the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Shiny Object Syndrome
How many Email lists are you following from self-proclaimed guru’s, that send out the latest product that is going to be the next best thing since sliced bread? How about buying into a WSO( Warrior Special Offer) that proclaims that this is going to take your website to the next level, sign up now for just $12 and see it work, or that fancy pants sales videos proclaiming that you could be driving fast cars and living in multi-million dollar mansions from just signing up to their brand new scheme that is going to earn you $xxxx, xx over night. When did they ever let you try it out before you subscribed to it?
Don’t be envious of these self-proclaimed guru’s they are just giving you convincing words with empty promises.
When have you ever benefitted from anything that these “offers” having given you? Take an in-depth look at these videos and you will notice flaws, like driving his own top notch car only to spot that actually it is a rental car, they proclaim to be rich but how do you know. They have the special gift of convincing you with the gift of the gab, they are con men. Unsubscribe from all those Email lists NOW.
Gluttony…. is a desire to consume more than that which one requires
Acquiring backlinks to your site is really asking for a vote and the more votes you get the better your site appears to be in authority. The problem with that is Google deems bought backlinks as unethical and breaches their guidelines. So what happens? your site is immediately penalised and your site will disappear from the SERPS. Disaster.
Get your links in a proper and trusted way by providing original quality content and people will link to that content giving you higher rankings and credibility with the search engines.
Lust…a craving for the pleasures of the body.
Shortcut to Success
“Show me the quickest way to make money online, because I’m broke and need money right now.”
How many times have I heard that or read that in forums or chat rooms that I visit?
This really takes me back to the Envy sin. It is wanting of something very quickly that someone else has. So you run after those shiny object systems just to please your lust of getting success at a fast rate.
But they are short-term, they are not evergreen, they will fade and go out of existence very quickly.
There are no shortcuts to success. Success in any business takes time, dedication and hard work.
Wrath….manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury.
Getting angry with Google or other search engines will only interrupt your progress in obtaining a successful online business.
Using BlackHat SEO which is unethical practices of Search Engine Marketing and probably covers most of these 7 deadly sins all rolled into one. Buying backlink packages, Unrelated Keywords, Keyword Stuffing, Duplicate Content or even Mirror sites, Cloaking, Hidden Links. All these are BlackHat SEO, trying to game the system because you get angry with Google or whoever for not ranking your site and therefore you try to use ways to get onto page 1. It does not and will not work. Google are a lot cleverer than you and will pick these methods up quicker than you can write your next article.
Greed….. the desire for material wealth or gain,
To be honest this is really more of a moral code. If someone asks you for your opinion on a really awesome niche that you hadn’t even thought of and then you go and steal it from right under their noses, that is unethical and morally wrong. It is also greedy. There is a multitude of niches out there that can be made into a viable and profitable business, Find your own Niche and let the person who asked for your opinion have their day with their researched niche.
Sloth…..a failure to do things that one should do
Taking No Action
An ongoing task within Running an online business is you never stop learning. There is something new to learn every single day. But if you don’t take action on what you learn your business is not going to grow.
Take action immediately after you have learnt something. There is no achievement if you research something and then sit on your hands.
Procrastination is your worse enemy for achieving success.
