Everyone knows that Google loves content, and rightly so. But Why Is It Necessary To Do Keyword Research and why is it so important?
Unique quality content ranks well, but how would your potential audience find that quality content they are looking for?
By typing phrases into the search bar for the topic they want information on.
As a webmaster, your task is finding those keywords/phrases through Keyword Research.
Why Do Keyword Research?
Simply put, keyword research is for finding a combination of the most relevant keyword/phrases with the most traffic and least amount of competition.
These are going to be the KEY to your success in getting your blog or page onto Google’s first page.
But finding those golden nuggets can sometimes be a very frustrating chore.
But with a good keyword research program, life can be made a lot easier.
You shouldn’t stress out over it too much, every word you write within your blog effectively becomes a keyword.
But high-value Keywords are the ones that you should be targeting.
They really should be known as key “Phrases” as one word will never convert to a surfer finding your site.
If you use “a word” you would have more chance of winning the Lottery than appearing on page 1 of Google.
So why do keyword research? To get as far up on page 1 as possible.
How do we find those elusive phrases
First, we have to use a good keyword research tool.
For the sake of this blog, I am going to demonstrate with what I consider to be among the top keyword research tools on the internet “Jaaxy“.
This tool will not only give you multiple options of your chosen keyword phrase but will also indicate whether it is a good keyword, with a traffic light system( Red, Amber or Green).
It will tell you how many average searches per month, how many visits to your site if you achieve page 1 on google and how many other sites are competing for that key-phrase.
It will also indicate how likely you will rank on page 1 for it.
There is another bonus to this tool as well.
If you are looking for a keyword rich domain name Jaaxy will tell you if that domain is available, and you can buy that domain from within the program. Awesome.
There are 3 basic things to look for when choosing a keyword.
- First and foremost the keyword must make sense, it must be a phrase that a human would type into the search bar.
- The monthly searches ideally should be over 50.
- The competing websites should be under 300.
When you have found your awesome Keyword, there are particular places within your blog that would give you the best chances of converting those Keywords into surfers finding your site (getting onto Google’s first page).
Firstly if you can find a Keyword rich Domain name all well and good, but otherwise make sure you have your keyword in the title of your page, and or the tagline.
After that your Keyword should appear at least once but no more than twice within the first paragraph of your blog, or the first 150 words, and the towards the end of your blog.
“Keyword stuffing” is repeating your keyword too many times in an attempt to get your page as high up the rankings as possible.
Google see’s this as a negative user experience and it will only harm your sites rankings not increase them.
You should be focusing on creating information-rich content that uses keywords in a grammatically correct sentence.
Do not concentrate on using your keywords within your blog.
Concentrate on writing naturally, talk to your audience as if you were having a conversation over a cup of coffee in your local coffee shop.
Low Hanging Fruit
Low hanging fruit keywords are ones that get a fair amount of traffic with the least amount of competing websites.
So if you can find a keyword(Phrase) with only 30/40 searches a month and 20/30 competing websites there’s a very good chance that you will get a page 1 ranking on Google.
The idea of taking this approach is to get rankings.
Quite often with a brand new website, it is difficult to get ranked under more competitive terms and you will be much better off targeting low competition keywords.
To be honest with you, there is no reason why you shouldn’t use this method all the time.
In a very competitive market you need to find as many ways to get your site seen as possible and by targeting low-hanging keywords you have every chance of achieving that.
Remember that Keywords are your road to success in getting ranked. That is what keyword research is for.
